How to Survive a Korean Swimming Pool: A-Z Guide for Foreigners

Swimming in Korea: How to Not Look Like a First Timer So, you’re in Seoul and thinking about hitting the pool? Honestly, great idea. Public swimming pools in Korea are cheap, super clean, and way better than you’d expect. But here’s the catch — the rules are pretty strict. Miss one step and you might get a whistle blown at you… or get told to get out of the pool (yeah, it happens). Here’s exactly what you need to know before you go, plus a few unspoken rules that’ll save you from some awkward moments.

1. The "Naked" Shower is NOT Optional

This is the big one. In many Western countries, you might just rinse off with your swimsuit on. DO NOT do that here. * The Rule: You must take a full, soapy shower without your swimsuit on before you enter the pool area. Scrub everything.
Why? It’s all about hygiene. Koreans are very proud of their crystal clear pool water, and skipping the shower is considered very disrespectful to other swimmers.

2. Your Essential Packing List

If you forget these, most public pools in Seoul won't even let you past the front desk:
The Mighty Swim Cap: No cap, no swim. Baseball hats are a no-go. You need a silicone or fabric swim cap that covers your hair completely.
Your Own Towel: Unlike luxury hotels, 90% of public pools in Korea do not provide towels. Pack a small one in your gym bag.
Soap & Shampoo: Most places only provide the locker—you need to bring your own toiletries for that mandatory pre-swim shower.

3. The 50Minute Rule (Don’t Get Caught Off Guard)

At most public pools in Korea, a whistle will suddenly go off about every 50 minutes. The first time it happens, it can be confusing — everyone just gets out of the pool at the same time. You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just a mandatory 10-minute break. Use that time to rest, grab some water, or hit the restroom before the next session starts.

4. Free Swim Hours (JayuSuyeong)

This is where a lot of people mess up. You can’t just walk in anytime and start swimming. Public pools in Korea run on fixed schedules, and “free swim” is only available during certain hours. If you show up at the wrong time, you might not be allowed in — even if the pool looks empty. Always check the schedule on the official website or at the sports center before you go.
